Soma is used for short term treatment of pain or discomfort that occurs from various types of muscular injuries. It is usually used along with a rigorous treatment plan that includes rest, physical therapy and other anti-inflammatory medications for strains, spasms and sprains. It is basically a muscle relaxer and works in the central nervous system to help relieve muscle pains. It may actually be effective by calming down the central nervous system.

This medication is generally taken by mouth about four times a day. How much is taken will depend on the medical condition and how well the body responds to the treatment program. It is important to take this medicine just as the doctor prescribes it and begin to reduce it under his instructions.

Most of the patients who use this medication do not experience any serious side effects. Some side effects that are not too serious unless they persist or get worse include dizziness, rapid heartbeat, face flushing, low blood pressure, drowsiness, or headaches. Do not drink alcoholic beverages of any kind while taking this medication. It is not recommended that this medication be used by pregnant women. It can cause harm to the unborn child. IF you become pregnant while you are taking Soma (Carisoprodol) make sure to tell your doctor immediately. Talk to your physician before breast feeding if you are taking this medicine.
